Tom and his brother, Lester, opened Ellis Department Store in Madison, WV, in 1937. They were later joined in that business by their brothers, Saba and Charlie. They built and moved into a larger Ellis Department Store in Madison in 1949. Tom retired from the department store in 1986 but continued to own and manage many real estate holdings.

In 1959, he co-founded Heck's Discount Store in Charleston, WV, along with his brother-in-law Fred Haddad, brother Lester Ellis, and friend Doug Cook. The retail chain grew to over 100 stores in nine states.

In the community of Madison, he served on the City Council for a total of 26 years; served on the Madison Methodist Church Council; Charter member of Madison Lions Club (1943); donated the building for a Community College Campus; donated the building for the Coal Heritage Museum.
