Biography

Nimmer Attiyeh died (__.)
Had three sons and eleven grandchildren, all born and reared in Ain Arab, Lebanon.

The Attiyehs are the descendants of a Christian Arab tribe which ruled the Southern Syrian Desert in the eighth century A.D. When the wave of Islam spread through the area, many were converted, stayed in the desert, and became Bedouins. There still resides a tribe called the Atiya in northern Saudi Arabia. The Christians left seeking refuge in what is now Syria and Lebanon, and eventually to Ain-Arab (now part of Lebanon, but at the time was part of Syria, which in turn was a part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire.)

Biography

Youseph (Joseph) Attiyeh died (__.)
When his father, Attiyeh, died at age 90, Youseph, replaced him as Mayor of Ain-Arab. The village was a well-established place of about 60 limestone houses, some with red-tile roofs. Most people in town were dependent upon agriculture, farming just a few acres each. Many people also had chickens and sheep.

The center of religious activities for the Christians was the St. Thomas Syrian Orthodox church. Ain-Arab was itself on relatively flat ground in a mountainous area about 45 miles southeast of Beirut. Travel was either by foot, horse, or donkey.
